The AT Learning Hub has been developed to streamline all the information and resources about Assistive Technology (AT) at UAL. Based on the findings of my recent survey, this hub serves as a central resource for both students and staff, providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to maximise the benefits of assistive technologies available within the university ecosystem. This initiative is a foundational step toward enhancing accessibility and fostering a more inclusive learning environment at UAL.

Centralised Information
To create the AT Learning Hub, I began by thoroughly reviewing the existing information scattered across various UAL platforms, including the UAL website, the student portal, the staff Canvas, and IT service pages. These platforms contain valuable resources, but the dispersed nature of the information often makes it challenging for users to locate what they need efficiently. My approach was to consolidate and centralise this information into a single, easily accessible hub, ensuring users are directed to the appropriate resources seamlessly.
The AT Learning Hub acts as a one-stop center, links and information to guide users to relevant pages. Whether it’s accessing detailed software guides, IT support services, or the UAL Library Guide, users can find everything they need in one place. This design reduces the time spent searching for resources and ensures that all information is interconnected and easy to navigate.
Enhanced Search Capabilities
A key feature of the AT Learning Hub is its easy search functionality, designed to enhance the user experience. The search tool allows users to quickly locate information about approved AT software available at UAL. Users can simply input the name of the software they are interested in, and it will display comprehensive details about the software, including its features, compatibility, and how it can be accessed.
For instance, if a student or staff member is interested in a particular software, they can use the search tool to determine whether it is available, where it can be installed, and what steps they need to take to gain access. This might involve contacting IT services to request a remote installation or downloading the software directly to their personal device. By simplifying this process, the hub ensures users can access the tools they need without unnecessary delays or confusion.
Comprehensive Software Guides
In addition to providing search capabilities, the AT Learning Hub includes detailed step-by-step guides for every approved software. These guides cover essential processes, such as:
- Downloading the Software: Clear instructions on where and how to download the software.
- Installing the Software: A step-by-step guide to ensure smooth installation, including troubleshooting tips for common issues.
- Using the Software: Tutorials and best practices to help users make the most of the software’s features.
These resources are extracted from various existing platforms, including the UAL Library Guide, official UAL pages, and the software providers’ websites. By consolidating this information into the AT Learning Hub, users no longer need to navigate multiple platforms to find what they need. The hub ensures that all resources are easily accessible and up-to-date, making the user journey straightforward and intuitive.
Continuous Improvement
The creation of the AT Learning Hub is an ongoing process. Feedback from students, staff, and other stakeholders will play a crucial role in refining and expanding its functionality. Regular updates will ensure that the hub remains a reliable and relevant resource, adapting to the evolving needs of the UAL community. Future enhancements may include:
- Interactive Tutorials: Adding video demonstrations and interactive modules to complement written guides.
- User Feedback Integration: Implementing a feedback mechanism to gather insights and improve user experience.
- Expanded Resources: Including additional tools and resources to support a broader range of accessibility needs.
Conclusion
The AT Learning Hub represents a significant step forward in making assistive technology resources more accessible and user-friendly at UAL. By centralising information, enhancing search capabilities, and providing detailed software guides, the hub empowers students and staff to utilise assistive technologies effectively. This initiative not only simplifies access to resources but also underscores UAL’s commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all members of its community. With continued development and user engagement, the AT Learning Hub will serve as a cornerstone of accessibility support at UAL for years to come.
